Chapter Application Case Studies with Critical Thinking Questions Scenario 1 The following tasks are all occurring at the same time. Prioritize the following tasks by putting numbers 1–4 next to each statement. (1 is the task you will do first, and 4 is the task you will do last.) 1.

3

The doctor asks you to perform an ECG on the patient in room 2 as he goes into room 3.

2.

2

Room 1 is open and ready for a patient.

3. 4.

4 The receptionist calls back to tell you that you have a patient who would like you to call her back regarding lab results. 1

The doctor is going into room 3 to perform a short procedure and needs you to assist him.

Scenario 2 You are competing with two other candidates for a medical assisting position at a large family practice center. All three of you are new graduates of the same medical assisting program. You all did well in your program and had a good rapport with the other students. Out of the three, you are the only one who is credentialed. During the interview, the supervisor asks you why she should hire you over the other two candidates. 1. What would you say? Answers will vary, but the following is an appropriate response: Out of the three of us, I am the only one who is credentialed. Possessing a credential validates my knowledge and right to practice medical assisting. It also shows my initiative and dedication to the profession . Role-Play Activity Bella is a coworker you have grown very fond of. As a matter of fact, she is well respected by everyone in the office. You happen to see her come out of the drug room and slip some drug samples in her purse. You approach her about it, and she says that she received permission from Dr. Castle to take some samples home to her husband. The next week, you see Bella take some more samples; this time she takes several packets of the medicine from the drug cabinet. Once again, you confront her. She states that the doctor told her that it was okay to take as many samples as she wanted because the drug rep always leaves a lot more samples than necessary. The next day, the office manager calls a meeting and states that several samples of the drug that Bella took are missing from the drug cabinet, and she encourages anyone who has knowledge of the disappearance to come forward. Following the meeting, Bella stops you and begs you not to say anything to anyone. Roleplay what you would say to Bella. Answers will vary, but students should state something like the following; I am sorry Bella, but I have no other choice but to go forward and tell the office supervisor. I will allow you to go forward and talk to the office manager; however, I will need to be present when you tell her . Competency Practice: Professionalism 1. Professionalism is a skill you will use daily as a medical assistant. Write a 1–2 page essay, using the following prompts. a. Describe how the patient might associate the medical assistant’s poor appearance with a lack of knowledge. b. Describe and discuss how being tardy and returning late from breaks will affect your success as a medical assistant. c. Discuss the ramifications of not using active listening skills in the field. d. Identify tasks that are considered in bounds for a medical assistant and tasks that are considered out of bounds. What are consequences of performing tasks outside of your scope of duty? e. How does a poor attitude reflect on you in the work place? Answers will vary but should revolve around the professionalism concept .

Why is it important to have good communication skills as a medical assistant?

Complex therapeutic relationships thrive on a delicate balance of listening, understanding, and educating. Patients are individuals with different needs and learning styles, making good communication is a medical assistant's most important skill.

How can the medical assistant be a good communicator?

Medical assistants should display patience, empathy, and professionalism in all their interactions. A good bedside manner can allay some of the patients' concerns and put them at ease during a stressful visit. You also need good listening skills as a medical assistant. Focus on your patient when they talk to you.

How should a medical assistant communicate with an elderly patient?

Medical assistants must provide clear and concise information to these patients in a way they can understand. If you tend to speak quickly, you should try to slow down and speak clearly with your elderly patients, especially if you have an accent that is different from what your patients are used to hearing.

What are four listening techniques that facilitate good communication between medical assistants and patients?

Ask patient open questions..
Repeating or rephrasing..
Reflection..
Paraphrasing/summarizing..
Providing silence..
Asking for clarification..
